The Society for Creative Anachronism ...Hi PegHead,

The Society for Creative Anachronism is a Middle Ages recreation organization. You can find more information at SCA.org.Kennahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087924242042361392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-1548096477450326782011-06-20T20:06:20.844-05:002011-06-20T20:06:20.844-05:00That is really cool. That's so fun!PegHeadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01684696406038817412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-16196970361156823962010-03-28T09:29:41.764-05:002010-03-28T09:29:41.764-05:00Both the garb and your daughter are beautiful! My ...Both the garb and your daughter are beautiful! My young teen son truly doesn't care what he wears so I just turn out quick-and-dirty "Norman tunics" for him. But I'll be following your embroidery choices for my own stuff. Thanks!

CaitlinChristine Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09258258319939175787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-3976970119855241252009-08-16T09:15:30.303-05:002009-08-16T09:15:30.303-05:00Hi Cateline,
A lot of my understanding of Viking ...Hi Cateline,

A lot of my understanding of Viking clothing comes from Mistress Thora Sharptooth's research. I am not an expert in it, but she is!
Anyway, in her article, "Viking Tunic Construction" (which is linked in my post) she says, "Also unique to Birka is the men's sleeved "riding" coat closed on the chest with small cast bronze buttons running from neck to waist." Which sounds to me like you would cut it exactly like I did for my daughter, but instead of closing it with a brooch, you would use little metal buttons (I would think shanked buttons with a loop closure.) to keep it closed.
Now, you also have the advantage of being in the East Kingdom, which I believe is where Mistress Thora lives as well. I have to say I'm a bit jealous!
Good luck, and please post pictures of your finished coats!
Thanks,
KennaKennahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087924242042361392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-50849195009006314102009-08-16T06:06:16.373-05:002009-08-16T06:06:16.373-05:00I found your blog from one of my facebook pages. My husband wishes to go Viking to be more persona accurate and i have two son's who are interested as well (and have grown out of their garb...which they do for a few years im told ;) Do you know of any reference to these open caftans that might be for boys? I really like the idea over a cloak for my two over active rambunctious boys. :)
Fondely....Cateline (SCA East Kingdom, Eisental)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-27592789730034985792009-08-10T09:20:03.684-05:002009-08-10T09:20:03.684-05:00Thank you very much!

I am the former Minister of Children for Gleann Abhann, and I noticed during my time there that the kids whose parents really included them in the SCA (didn't just take them to events) really got a lot more out of the organization.

Besides, they're great dress-up dolls! *Grin*Kennahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09087924242042361392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4560783329784126657.post-89399854232897872672009-08-10T08:45:24.160-05:002009-08-10T08:45:24.160-05:00Thank you for posting this. I think they might like something like this. Your work is beautiful and I sincerely hope you get the recognition you deserve. - Countess Eorann O'Connor, Outlands (formerly Atlantia)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
